The State of Health Care in the Crossroads: A Letter from Brett Maxfield, CEO, DeTar Healthcare System
4/3/2026
Health care in the Crossroads is evolving rapidly. As our region grows, so do the demands on hospitals, clinics, and providers to deliver high-quality care while adapting to workforce shortages, advancing technology, and the changing expectations of patients. At DeTar Healthcare System, we see these challenges as opportunities to strengthen and modernize care for the Crossroads.
Founded in 1924 by Drs. William and Webb T. DeTar as a 10-bed hospital in a remodeled Victoria home, DeTar has grown alongside our community. From expanding to a 30-bed facility in 1936 to now operating two full-service hospitals — DeTar Hospital Navarro and DeTar Hospital North — our history reflects a continued commitment to meeting the region’s needs.
Today, population growth across South Texas is increasing demand for primary care, specialty services, and emergency care. At the same time, healthcare systems nationwide face workforce shortages. We are addressing this by investing in recruitment, strengthening clinical partnerships, and creating supportive environments where physicians, nurses, and staff can thrive while delivering exceptional care.
Technology is also transforming how we serve our community. From expanded cancer services and advanced diagnostics to our recent expansion of robotic surgical capabilities — including advanced joint replacement technology — we are bringing leading-edge medicine to Victoria and the surrounding region. Patients no longer need to travel to larger metropolitan areas for sophisticated procedures; they can receive high-level, patient-centered care right here in the Crossroads, close to family and support systems.
As healthcare continues to evolve, our mission remains constant: to provide accessible, high-quality care that meets today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges. We are proud of our rich history and even more excited about the future — one defined by innovation, collaboration, and an enduring commitment to Victoria and surrounding communities that we are privileged to serve.
