The Power of Nurses: A Force for Healing, Leadership and Change
5/1/2026
National Nurses Week, celebrated May 6–12, shines a well-deserved spotlight on the heart of healthcare: our nurses. This year, the American Nurses Association has declared the 2026 theme, “The Power of Nurses,” recognizing the extraordinary impact nurses have in shaping care, advocating for patients, and strengthening the health of our communities.
At DeTar Healthcare System, I have the privilege of witnessing that power every day. It’s seen in the quiet moments at a patient’s bedside, the swift decisions made in critical situations, and the unwavering compassion shown to families during life’s most vulnerable times. Nursing is more than a profession—it is a calling grounded in skill, resilience, and purpose.
Nurses represent the largest segment of our nation’s healthcare workforce, and their influence reaches far beyond hospital walls. They serve on the frontlines of care, in clinics, in hospitals, in homes, in schools, and across our community. As healthcare continues to evolve—with an aging population, advancing technology, and growing demand for access—nurses are leading the way, ensuring care remains safe, high-quality, and deeply human.
The power of nurses is multifaceted:
The power to heal: Through clinical expertise and compassionate presence, nurses deliver care that supports both physical and emotional well-being.
The power to lead: Nurses are mentors, educators, and advocates, guiding patients and shaping the next generation of caregivers.
The power to innovate: From embracing new technologies to improving care delivery models, nurses are driving meaningful change across healthcare.
The power to influence: Their voices help inform policy, improve patient outcomes, and ensure healthcare systems better serve all people.
At DeTar, our nurses embody these qualities every day. They are the steady hands in moments of crisis, the reassuring voices in uncertainty, and the driving force behind continuous improvement in patient care.
As our community grows and healthcare needs become more complex, the role of nurses will only become more essential. Their dedication, knowledge, and leadership are critical to building a healthier future for the Crossroads.
During National Nurses Week, I invite our community to join me in recognizing and celebrating the incredible nurses who care for us and our loved ones. Their impact is profound, their commitment unwavering, and their power undeniable.
Let us take this opportunity—and every opportunity—to thank a nurse.
