MountainView Launches Postpartum Bracelet Program to Help Moms Get Life-saving Care
1/16/2026
After giving birth, many moms go home and heal with no concerns postpartum. However, there can be health risks such as infection, heavy bleeding, heart problems or even organ failure. That’s why MountainView Regional Medical Center is launching a postpartum bracelet program to help ensure mothers get the appropriate care during an emergency.
Through the program, maternity patients are given a teal, silicon bracelet that reads, “Recently Gave Birth/Still At Risk,” when they are discharged from the hospital. Patients are encouraged to wear the bracelet for six weeks after delivery, when the risk for postpartum complications is highest.
“Not only does wearing the bracelet remind new mothers to prioritize their health, but it also acts as a signal to first responders in the community that this person recently gave birth, even if they aren’t able to communicate that,” said MountainView Director of Women’s Services Tracy Marcotte. “Having this knowledge helps the medical team make a more accurate diagnosis. For example, a seizure could be related to postpartum eclampsia, and the treatment they receive could be the difference between life and death.”
According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, the number of deaths due to pregnancy complications in the United States has been increasing. In 2021, more than 1,200 women died of maternal causes, climbing from 861 in 2020 and 754 in 2019. However, “more than 80 percent of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable,” the CDC states.
MountainView’s bracelet program can alert emergency medical personnel to be on the lookout for postpartum conditions, such as hemorrhage, postpartum depression and/or anxiety, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism, postpartum eclampsia, cardiomyopathy, and sepsis.
“Leaving the hospital is just the beginning of the postpartum journey,” Marcotte said. “New moms should keep watch for symptoms like heavy bleeding, high blood pressure, chest pain or overwhelming sadness — because caring for yourself is just as important as caring for your baby.”
MountainView’s postpartum bracelet program is optional. For patients who would like to participate in the program but delivered at MountainView before bracelets were distributed, please visit the hospital to pick one up.
