From Recovery to Independence: How DeTar Occupational Therapists Make a Difference

Recognizing the Vital Role of OT in Restoring Independence and Enhancing Lives
Getting back to the little things—buttoning a shirt, cooking a favorite meal, or returning to work—can mean everything after an illness or injury. During National Occupational Therapy Month this April, DeTar Healthcare System is highlighting the important role occupational therapy (OT) plays in helping patients regain independence and get back to doing what they love most.
“Our occupational therapists are essential to the healing process because they help people not only regain their independence but also reclaim their confidence and the skills they need for everyday life,” Maggie Barefield, assistant chief nursing officer, said.
Occupational therapy focuses on helping individuals of all ages recover and perform everyday tasks following illness, injury, or disability. From regaining strength after surgery to adapting to life after a stroke, occupational therapists work closely with patients to build the skills needed for daily living and long-term independence. This can also include learning how to use adaptive tools and mobility devices to help patients recover.
“Everyday, we see firsthand how the work of occupational therapists goes beyond physical recovery, it’s about restoring independence, maintaining a person’s dignity and helping patients get back to living their lives,”
Jaclyn Adamek, director of rehabilitation services, said. “Our therapists work one-on-one with patients to ensure they can safely and confidently return to their daily routines.”
At DeTar, occupational therapy services support a wide range of patient needs, including recovery after surgery or injury, stroke and neurological rehabilitation, pediatric therapy, and specialized hand therapy. These services are designed to help patients overcome physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges while improving their ability to function independently.
The Impact of Occupational Therapy on Recovery
Research continues to demonstrate the measurable impact occupational therapy has on patient outcomes:
- Patients receiving occupational therapy are less likely to be readmitted to the hospital, with studies showing up to a 55% reduction in readmissions
- OT interventions can reduce fall risk by more than 30% among older adults
- Therapy focused on daily living skills significantly improves overall quality of life and long-term independence
“These outcomes reflect the true value of occupational therapy,” Adamek said. “We’re not just helping patients recover—we’re helping them regain control of their lives, maintain independence, and safely return to the routines and people they love.”
In addition to traditional therapy, DeTar offers specialized outpatient occupational therapy services, including lymphedema management, hand therapy, neurological rehabilitation programs, and custom splinting—bringing advanced care close to home for patients across the Crossroads region.
Throughout April, DeTar Healthcare System encourages the community to recognize the important work of occupational therapists and to learn more about how therapy services can support recovery and improve everyday life.
