Donation Supports the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent
Following their September $1 Book Sale, DeTar Volunteer Services raised $300 to donate to DeTar’s Bowls of Hope cereal drive, supporting the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent’s Hunger Hero Challenge. The donation will help provide cereal—one of the most requested items at food banks—to families in need throughout the Crossroads area.
“Volunteer Services is proud to support programs that address critical community needs,” Patty Scevers, president of the DeTar Volunteer Services Board, said. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from our book sale held on Sept. 11 will directly help families access nutritious meals, and that makes all the difference.”
With the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent’s buying power, $2 can purchase one box of cereal. With $300, the Food Bank will stretch the donation to provide 150 boxes of cereal for hungry families. “We are grateful for our volunteers’ dedication,” Emily Weatherly, director of marketing & volunteers with DeTar Healthcare System, said. “DeTar team members are continuing to donate throughout the month, and we encourage the public to join this effort. Together, we can ensure families in the Crossroads have access to healthy food.”
Throughout the Crossroads area, thousands rely on the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent to fill their shelves, stock their food pantries, and feed Victoria’s most vulnerable populations. Robin Cadle, CEO/president of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, shared, “every dollar donated helps our Food Bank provide eight meals for people in the community, some of which might even be your neighbors.” In 2024, throughout the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent’s 11-county coverage area, they distributed 8.1 million pounds of food, 6.8 million meals and provided weekend meals to 1,250 students. “Our hope is that, through our Hunger Action Challenge, we can fill our shelves with food for those in need. We are grateful for organizations like DeTar Volunteer Services for their $300 donation.”
During September, the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent is asking local businesses and organizations to become Hunger Action Heroes by raising both monetary and in-kind donations to combat hunger across their 11-county service area. Donations for DeTar’s Bowls of Hope cereal drive continue through September. Community members may drop off cereal at any DeTar location or donate online at https://givebutter.com/c/Hunger-Hero-Challenge/teams/detar-bowls-of-hope.
September is Hunger Action Month
September is nationally recognized as Hunger Action Month, making it the perfect time for communities to unite and combat hunger together. FBGC supports over 100 agencies across 11 counties including Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, Refugio, Wharton, and Victoria.
Cereal is among the most requested items at food banks because it provides a quick, nutritious meal requiring minimal preparation. “A simple bowl of cereal can fuel children and families who might otherwise go without breakfast. Your donation can make a meaningful impact by ensuring essential nourishment reaches those in need,” Weatherly said. “Together, we can make a difference — one bowl at a time.” Contributions, whether at any DeTar location or online, directly support food pantries throughout the Crossroads region.
“We know firsthand how important nutritious food is to overall health and well-being,” Weatherly said. “Earlier this year, our community’s generosity was remarkable during the Jars of Love peanut butter drive, where we collected over 4,400 jars to help local families. Now, with Bowls of Hope, we’re focusing on cereal to provide an easy, healthy start to the day for children and families facing hunger. We invite everyone to join us in this vital effort.”
Green donation barrels are available at DeTar locations to accept cereal donations or those wishing to donate online can support at https://givebutter.com/c/Hunger-Hero-Challenge/teams/detar-bowls-of-hope.
