DeTar Hospital's Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive Collects 842 Jars of Peanut Butter for Food Bank of the Golden Crescent

VICTORIA, TEXAS– (April 3, 2023) – To help address hunger in our community, and in celebration of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2, DeTar Hospital is donating more than more than 800 jars of peanut butter to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent (FBGC).
All of that peanut butter was donated by DeTar Hospital’s employees, medical staff members, and volunteers during the recent Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive.
According to Robin Cadle, CEO of FBGC, more than 40,000 residents in the Crossroads region struggle to put food on the table. The Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive was launched to help support individuals who are facing food insecurity, which is a social determinant of health.
“Food insecurity has a significant impact on a person’s overall health and well-being,” said Bernard Leger, DeTar Hospital CEO. “Through our Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, we are working to help fight hunger in our community. Our generous staff and providers were so eager to donate and really stepped up to be sure we could stock the shelves.”
Peanut butter is one of the most requested items for food banks because it is highly nutritious and has a long shelf life. Unfortunately, many food banks in America report it is also one of the least donated food items. Other foods needed by food banks include canned soup, canned fruit and vegetables, canned stew, canned fish, canned beans, rice, and pasta.
Robin Cadle adds that, “Many of our neighbors in need are families where both husband and wife are working. They sometimes can’t make ends meet due to unexpected circumstances. Our most vulnerable population is our seniors and children. Some of these senior citizens are on fixed incomes, taking care of grandchildren and can’t afford both food and medical necessities. When you donate your time, talent, or treasures to the FBGC, you are assisting us in our mission of helping heal the hurt of hunger.”
For those looking to volunteer, the FBGC is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Volunteers must be 18 years or older unless otherwise volunteering with a parent or responsible party. Monetary donations can be made at tfgbc.org/donate, or mailed to:
Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, P.O. Box 5085, Victoria, TX 77903.
The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent is a 501(c)(3) non-profit recognized by the IRS and member of Feeding America (FA) and Feeding Texas. FBGC supports over 100 agencies in the 11 county service area of Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonazales, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, Refugio, Wharton, and Victoria counties.
