Address Healthcare Needs Now for a Fresh Start in the New Year
9/29/2025
DeTar Healthcare System recently wrapped up its “Enjoy the Ride: Navigating a Longer, Healthier Life” email campaign, which highlighted the importance of preventive care and addressing long-delayed health needs for overall longevity and well-being.
If you're among the many Americans who tend to put off preventive screenings or elective procedures, now is the perfect time to schedule those appointments before the end of the year. Taking action now not only supports long-term health but may also help maximize insurance benefits for patients who have already met their annual deductibles.
“If a screening or procedure is recommended, it’s typically because early detection or timely intervention can prevent more serious issues later,” said Jared Nielson, FNP, a primary care provider with DeTar Medical Group. “Whether it’s a mammogram, colonoscopy, or hernia repair, delaying care can lead to more complicated procedures, longer recoveries, or unnecessary suffering. Physically and mentally, people feel better when they take charge of their health.”
Preventive Screenings to Consider Before Year-End
- Wellness Visit: An annual check-up with a primary care provider is foundational to preventive health. These visits typically include a review of your medical history, vital signs, and any new symptoms or concerns. Bloodwork to assess cholesterol, blood sugar, and other key health indicators may also be ordered.
- Mammogram: The American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40 for women at average risk. Women with higher risk factors—such as a family history of breast cancer or certain genetic markers—may need earlier or more frequent screening.
- Colonoscopy: The CDC advises that average-risk adults begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. A colonoscopy is especially effective, as it allows doctors to detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous. For those without additional risk factors, screening is typically repeated every 10 years.
In addition to preventive care, many patients delay elective surgeries that could significantly improve quality of life—especially joint replacements.
“We see people every day whose quality of life has been severely impacted by joint pain or limited mobility,” said Dr. Donald Breech, orthopedic surgeon at DeTar Healthcare System. “Procedures like hip and knee replacements allow patients to return to an active lifestyle, free from chronic discomfort. Waiting too long can mean increased joint deterioration and a tougher recovery.”
Dr. Breech also emphasized the importance of timely intervention and post-surgical support. “Physical therapy after a joint replacement is essential to regaining strength and mobility. The sooner you address the issue, the better the long-term outcome for both physical function and overall health.”
