DeTar Supports Crossroads Guardians of Hope During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
10/6/2025
Pink ribbons can be found on nearly every street corner of America during October as fighters, survivors and loved ones raise awareness for the female dominated form of cancer by showing off their brilliant shades of pink.
While DeTar North’s Imaging Center and DeTar Cancer Center are on the forefront of breast cancer detection and treatment, volunteers and employees are further supporting local breast cancer patients and survivors long after the first doctor’s visit and the last ringing of the champion bell.
Through two events, DeTar Healthcare System is looking to raise donations for local non-profit, Crossroads Guardians of Hope. Throughout the year, residents have most likely seen the organization’s iconic pink fire truck, pink ambulance and pink Ford Crown Victoria cop car. For years, survivors and those who have lost loved ones to cancer have memorialized their battles with cancer onto the pink vehicles with sharpies.
For Stephanie Schuckenbrock, director of orthopedics and bariatrics at DeTar Healthcare System, signing Crossroads Guardians of Hope’s pink fire truck after her battle with breast cancer was a pivotal moment in her journey. “That was when I finally recognized myself as a survivor,” Schuckenbrock said.
Crossroads Guardians of Hope helps ease the financial burden of medical treatment and traveling expenses for cancer patients and their families. Through funds raised through a pink out breakfast and a volunteer bake sale, DeTar is looking to further support local families through one of the most challenging times of their lives.
On Wednesday, October 15 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at DeTar Hospital Navarro’s Cafe, DeTar is inviting the community to a Pink Out Breakfast in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Enjoy a hot and delicious breakfast for a great cause—all proceeds will benefit Crossroads Guardians of Hope, supporting local patients and families on their cancer journey. Tickets are $10 per plate (available at the door; cash only).
“On the menu we’ll have fun colored foods like pink pancakes and pink cinnamon rolls, ” Kristi Nielson, director of DeTar Cancer Center, said. “This will be a great way to start your day while also supporting a great local non-profit organization.”
Later in the month on Wednesday, October 29, DeTar Volunteer Services will be hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale at DeTar Hospital Navarro from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Up for grabs will be homemade treats, baked goods and things sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. Every dollar raised will go directly to Crossroads Guardians of Hope. Stop by during your break, grab a treat (or a few!), and help us spread some kindness—one cookie at a time.
“We are excited to be supporting Crossroads Guardians of Hope,” Patty Scevers, president of the DeTar Volunteer Services Board, said. “We hope we can spread sugar, smiles and support for local cancer patients, our volunteers put a lot of heart into this event and we hope the community will join us in making a difference.”
This month, raising awareness is important but preventative screenings such as self-exams and mammograms can help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. Early detection and prevention can be life-saving. Scheduling mammograms at DeTar is now easier than ever with online booking. Please visit www.detar.com/mammogram to book your mammogram today. It could save your life.
