DeTar Healthcare System Reports on its Care for the Crossroads Community in 2025: Total Impact Exceeded $272 Million
3/5/2026
With more than 261,000 patient encounters last year, DeTar Healthcare System delivered on its commitment to provide quality healthcare for the Crossroads community. The health system’s 2025 Community Benefit Report shows care extended well beyond the hospital and clinics, contributing more than $145 million to the region through charity/uncompensated care provided, capital dollars reinvested in services and facilities, employee payroll, charitable projects and payment of more than $6.5 million in taxes to support area schools and infrastructure.
Emergency medicine is a critical service, with more than 37,000 visits to the emergency room at DeTar Hospital Navarro and DeTar Hospital North. Life-saving medically necessary care was provided to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
As part of its commitment to expanding access and strengthening local healthcare, DeTar Healthcare System invested more than $9 million in capital projects and service enhancements. This included advanced surgical technology and operating room upgrades, such as a new spine surgery table, specialized retractors, contracted neuromonitoring systems, and high-resolution surgical microscopes. These enhancements support DeTar’s surgical teams in performing minimally invasive spine procedures, targeted decompressions, cervical and lumbar disc replacements, and advanced treatment for degenerative spine conditions, spinal trauma, and other complex disorders—allowing patients to receive sophisticated surgical care close to home.
In early 2025, DeTar Healthcare System became the first facility in Victoria and the Crossroads to offer a dual chamber leadless pacemaker for patients with bradycardia, performed by Dr. Jasvinder Sidhu, Cardiac Electrophysiologist with DeTar Medical Group. This advanced technology improves heart rhythm control, reduces complications, extends battery life, and delivers more comfortable cardiac care close to home.
In August 2025, DeTar further expanded access to care with the opening of DeTar Medical Group Primary Care East. Located on the campus of Texas A&M University–Victoria, the clinic provides convenient, comprehensive primary care services for students and the broader community. Staffed by two graduates of the DeTar Family Medicine Residency Program, the new clinic reflects DeTar’s ongoing investment not only in access to care, but also in growing and retaining physicians to meet the region’s healthcare needs.
The reinvestment in services benefits local residents and serves as an important resource for patients who come from other hospitals that are as far as 50 miles away.
“We are here to care for our patients and the place we all call home,” said Brett Maxfield, chief executive officer of DeTar Healthcare System. “Health is central to quality of life, and we offer advanced medical services here in Crossroads to make it easy to access the care you need. It’s our privilege to transform lives every day, helping patients manage their health at every stage of life.”
Area families grew with the help of DeTar Hospital North as more than 900 babies were delivered in 2025. DeTar achieved a c-section rate for first time mothers with low-risk births of 23.4%, outperforming both the national goal of 23.6% and the national average of 25.3%, promoting healthier outcomes for both mothers and babies while supporting a positive birth experience.
The health system and its employees also support local organizations that make a difference, especially those addressing social determinants of health. Through service projects such as the annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter drive for The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and contributions to charitable organizations such as Mid-Coast Family Services, Hope of South Texas, Golden Crescent CASA, VISD Education Foundation, DeTar Healthcare System gives back to the community throughout the year.
Payroll of more than $98 million supports the delivery of around the clock care by a team of physicians, nurses and support staff, all passionate about serving patients. Their compassion and skills make a difference in the lives of neighbors, friends and the larger community.
“We have immense gratitude for every member of our team, and we are investing in resources to support them in their work and a culture that attracts and retains these talented people,” said Maxfield. “This team is passionate about delivering quality care to those who are counting on us. We have an unwavering commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and doing the right thing every day for those who trust us with their care.”
