DeTar Brings New 3D Mammography Technology to the Crossroads, Offers $99 Screening Mammograms in October
10/2/2026
DeTar Healthcare System has expanded its breast imaging capabilities with the latest 3D mammography technology designed to provide radiologists with a more detailed view of breast tissue while incorporating features intended to improve the patient experience.
The new systems were installed in late August, bringing the technology to the Crossroads just ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Unlike conventional 2D mammography, which produces images from a limited number of views, 3D mammography captures multiple images of the breast from different angles. The resulting series of images allows radiologists to examine breast tissue in greater detail and evaluate different layers of the breast. DeTar has benefited from having 3D mammography in place for several years; this tech upgrade ensures Crossroads community members have the latest technology available in the market.
The technology also incorporates features designed to distribute compression more comfortably across the breast. Compression remains an important part of mammography because it helps produce clear images, but DeTar's new technology is designed with the patient experience in mind.
James Calliham, MHA, director of radiology at DeTar Healthcare System, said the investment reflects DeTar's commitment to advancing breast imaging while also addressing concerns patients may have about the mammography experience. "Our goal is to provide our radiologists with the tools they need while making the experience better for our patients," Calliham said. "We know a mammogram can be uncomfortable or even intimidating for some women, so having technology that supports both quality imaging and patient comfort is an important step forward."
Calliham said the additional detail provided through 3D imaging gives radiologists another way to evaluate breast tissue when reviewing mammograms. "With 3D mammography, our radiologists are able to look through the breast tissue in multiple images and evaluate the breast from different angles," Calliham said. "That gives them a more detailed view of the tissue and can help them identify areas that may need a closer look."
The systems also incorporate advanced computer-assisted technology that provides additional support as radiologists review mammography images.
The technology can help draw attention to areas that may warrant further evaluation, while the radiologist remains responsible for interpreting the images and determining whether additional testing is appropriate.
"Computer-assisted technology is another tool for our radiologists," Calliham said. "It provides an additional layer of support as they review the images, but the radiologist's experience and interpretation remain central to the process." When additional evaluation is needed, DeTar also offers stereotactic breast biopsy, an image-guided procedure used to obtain tissue samples from certain areas of concern identified through breast imaging.
"Having the imaging and biopsy capabilities available here allows us to continue that evaluation within our community when a patient needs additional testing," Calliham said. "Our patients deserve access to advanced breast imaging close to home."
For patients who may have delayed screening because of concerns about discomfort, Calliham said the new technology is another reason to make routine mammography a priority. "We understand that mammograms aren't necessarily something people look forward to," Calliham said. "Anything we can do to make the experience more comfortable, while also giving our radiologists high-quality images to interpret, is important."
Brett Maxfield, CEO of DeTar Healthcare System, said bringing the new technology to Victoria gives women in the Crossroads greater access to advanced breast imaging close to home.
"Having the latest mammography technology right here in the Crossroads means women have access to advanced breast imaging without having to leave our community," Maxfield said. "We want to give women every opportunity to detect breast cancer early, while also making the experience as comfortable and convenient as possible."
To make screening more accessible during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DeTar is offering $99 screening mammograms throughout October, beginning Oct. 1.
The $99 rate is available for eligible screening mammograms and is a self-pay price; insurance will not be filed for the exam. The special is intended for women who are due for a routine screening mammogram and are at average risk for breast cancer.
The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammography beginning at age 40 for women at average risk. Women who are at higher risk may need to begin screening earlier or have additional screening and should talk with their healthcare provider about the screening plan that is right for them.
A screening mammogram is intended for women who do not have breast symptoms or a known breast concern. Women experiencing a lump, breast pain, nipple changes or another breast concern should talk with their healthcare provider about the appropriate type of breast imaging.
