Community Education
The following are education offerings by DeTar Healthcare System. For more information on any of the classes, please call the numbers listed with each or please call our Education Department at (361) 788 - 6135.
Community CPR Classes
Community CPR Classes (Basic Life Saving) meet the fourth Wednesday of each month. They offer adult and pediatric courses (which alternate) at a pace that is audience friendly and stress free.
DeTar also offers a pediatric CPR class for moms that deliver at DeTar. One other adult person of their choice may attend as well. For those that do not deliver at DeTar, but would like to take the course, the charge is $10 with no completion card. If you would like the completion card, the charge is $20.

Diabetes Education
DeTar offers many educational opportunities to those with Diabetes and family and friends that want to know more about Diabetes.
We offer a Diabetes lunch bunch group that meets the 2nd Tuesday of the Month. The price to attend is $5 for the meal and the group meets from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the new educational classrooms located in DeTar's Medi Center, the new building next to DeTar Navarro.
DeTar also offers a diabetes educational class, a pump support group that meets quarterly and offers a support group for parents of type 1 diabetic children with meetings every other month.
DeTar is currently forming a support group for type 2 children and their parents. More information on this new support group will be released soon.

Prenatal Classes
Your pregnancy and the delivery of your child will be one of the most exciting moments in your life. The goal of the childbirth educators at Women and Children’s Hospital at DeTar North is to help you and your support person understand the process of labor and delivery and to answer questions about the birth of your child. The more knowledge you have about pregnancy and delivery, the more likely you will look forward to this experience with confidence and a positive experience. The childbirth education classes consist of 4 classes. These classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM with a fee of $40. Sibling Class
The addition of a new brother or sister can be an exciting time for children. The sibling class at Women’s and Children Hospital at DeTar North help make this an easier transition for your child. During the class, we will cover simple newborn care tasks, discuss how children may feel adjusting to the new addition, and will give your child a tour of the Birthday Suites as well as a tour of the new Hospital. Nutrition in Pregnancy
You may call to arrange an individual appointment to meet with one of our Registered Dieticians to discuss nutrition in pregnancy. Please call (361) 788-6170.
Breastfeeding Basics
The Breastfeeding Basics class is designed to inform soon-to-be moms of the numerous benefits of breastfeeding and will also discuss the fundamental of breastfeeding (latching on and positioning). The class will also address common barriers to breastfeeding and educate women on resources that are available to help make breastfeeding success. Newborn Care Class
Classes are offered at the Community Mother Child Health Center. These classes are free. Please call (361) 570-1082
Water Works
Water Works is a 60-minute class using the resistance of water for a great cardiovascular and muscular workout. An excellent choice for beginners, seniors and pregnant women. Call DeTar Health Center at (361) 576-5884.
CPR Class
Class includes adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The classes will be held on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Class is free for new moms whom deliver at DeTar and one adult of her choice. For further information on this class, call the DeTar Education Department at (361) 788-6136
